Donegal at your Doorstep
• Fintra Beach: 4 Mins | Best for morning walks & swims.
• Killybegs Harbour: 5 Mins | Best for fresh seafood & local pubs.
• Slieve League Cliffs: 25 Mins | Best for world-class cliff views.
• Muckross Head: 15 Mins | Best for rock climbing & fossil hunting.
• Glengesh Pass: 20 Mins | Best for Ireland’s most dramatic hair-pin drive.

Fintra Bay isn't just a local beach; it is one of our favourite places in the world. It is the perfect spot for guests staying at Fintra Bay Hideaway. Located a 4-minute drive (or a scenic 15-minute walk) from the Hideaway, the arrival is half the magic.
As you descend the steep winding road toward the beach, you are greeted by a breathtaking panoramic reveal of Donegal Bay, with views stretching all the way to the iconic Benbulben mountain in Sligo.
Down on the sand, this Blue Flag beach offers a massive golden crescent backed by rolling dunes. Because the waters are calm and clear, it is a safe haven for swimming and perfect for families building sandcastles. Whether you go for a morning dip or a sunset stroll, it is a must-see."
**Stephen & Pauline’s Tip:**
*"If you decide to walk there, just remember—the hill back up to the apartment is a great cardio workout! If you want a relaxing trip, we recommend taking the car (there is plenty of parking at the bottom)."*
You can’t visit South West Donegal without seeing the majestic Slieve League (or Sliabh Liag in Irish). Located just a 20-minute drive from Fintra Bay Hideaway, these cliffs are the crown jewel of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Rising almost 2,000 feet from the Atlantic Ocean, they are nearly three times higher than the Cliffs of Moher—and in our opinion, far more spectacular because they remain wild and uncrowded. Whether you are an experienced hiker tackling the 'One Man’s Pass' or simply driving to the viewing point to take in the awe-inspiring scenery, the scale of the cliffs will take your breath away. It's a must-see for anyone staying at our Killybegs holiday rental.
**Stephen & Pauline’s Tip:**
*"Skip the shuttle bus if you can! If you drive before 10 AM or after 6 PM, you can often drive your car right up to the upper car park (saving you the long walk up the hill). It’s the best spot for a sunset you will never forget."*

If you want to see the raw power of the Atlantic, take a short drive to Muckross Head. This is a favorite spot of ours for escaping the crowds and getting close to nature.
The experience starts at the viewpoint above the beach, where you can watch surfers tackling some of the best waves in Donegal. From there, drive down to the headland (there is ample parking) and take a walk along the cliff tops. The rock formations here are fascinating—uniquely layered and perfect for climbing or sitting to watch the massive swells crash against the shore.
For a quieter adventure, head down to the stony beach below. It’s a brilliant spot for fossil hunting; look closely at the rocks, and you’ll find ancient marine fossils embedded right in the stone.
**Stephen & Pauline’s Tip:**
*“Bring your camera and a windbreaker! Muckross is famous for its dramatic overhangs (great for photos) but it can get breezy. It’s the perfect place to blow the cobwebs away before heading back to the Hideaway for a hot cup of tea.”*

For guests who love a scenic road trip, the drive through Glengesh Pass is non-negotiable. Connecting the historic village of Glencolmcille to the heritage town of Ardara, this winding mountain road is one of the most photographed spots on the Wild Atlantic Way.
The viewing point at the top offers a stunning perspective of the famous hairpin turns meandering down into the lush green valley below. It feels like stepping back into an older, wilder Ireland. Whether you are driving it or cycling it (if you are brave!), the panoramic views are worth every twist and turn.
**Stephen & Pauline’s Tip:**
*“We recommend doing this drive on your way to Ardara. After you conquer the pass, stop in Ardara for a bowl of chowder at Nancy’s Bar or visit Eddie Doherty’s to see traditional hand-woven Donegal Tweed being made. It makes for a perfect day out.”*

Stepping into Glencolmcille (Gleann Cholm Cille) feels like traveling to the edge of the world. This area is so cinematic that it recently took center stage as the filming location for the Liam Neeson thriller, In the Land of Saints and Sinners. As you explore the valley, you will recognize the rugged, dramatic landscapes that captivated Hollywood.
What to See
St. Columba’s Church: Don't miss this beautiful historic Church of Ireland building. Tucked away and surrounded by trees, it offers a peaceful, atmospheric step back in time.
The Folk Village: This living history museum features thatched cottages recreating centuries of Irish life. It is the best place to understand how our ancestors survived on this wild coast
Silver Strand (An Trá Bán): A stunning horseshoe beach with crystal-clear water, accessible via a steep stairway.
**Stephen & Pauline’s Tip:**
*“After visiting the old church and the movie locations, head to the Folk Village tea room for a scone. It’s a great spot to relax before tackling the stairs down to Silver Strand!”*
Preparing for Your Donegal Adventure
To make the most of the Wild Atlantic Way, we recommend packing:
